Researchers have often argued that environmental Citizen Science (CS) initiatives may contribute to the transformation of citizens into environmentally aware and active citizens (Bela et al., 2016; Jorgensen & Jorgensen, 2020). However, the potential of CS to support and promote Education for Environmental Citizenship (EEC) has not been explored yet. A systematic review of empirical research, published during the last 20 years, was conducted, seeking to examine how environmental CS initiatives may contribute to the promotion of EEC.
